BOOM! It was a picture perfect tackle as I wrapped my arms and picked up the opposing player and drove him into the ground as the home crowd rose to their feet and cheered. The hit was so hard that he fumbled and one of my teammates recovered and ran it down to the 20. The very next play our tailback took it the rest of the way for a game breaking touchdown. All my teammates were congratulating me, because it was my hit that changed the game and gave us the momentum. As the crowd settled down from the excitement everyone took their seat – everyone except my father that is. My friends who were in the stands tell me that my Dad stood proudly the rest of the game as if to say, “that was my son who made that play.” Without saying a word that was the first time I knew my Dad was proud of me. The next time was when I graduated high school when he actually said, “I am proud of you.” The next one was when I graduated Navy boot camp, and there have been several times since when I have heard those words. I remember each time as if they happened yesterday and I cling to each word like they are gold. It is known as the “Father Blessing” and it is the moment that every boy longs for. God blessed Jesus at his baptism when He said, “This is My Son in whom I am well pleased.” What a difference Dads can make – so join us this Father's Day as we celebrate Dads making a difference.
